Aftercare
Caring for a new piercing is essential to its longevity. We’ll go into detail here about how we suggest caring for a healing piercing, but remember every person and piercing has their own needs. Should you have any questions or concerns we are always available to discuss your particular situation. Don’t hesitate to seek the help of a healthcare professional either!
With that being said, let’s get into it. Basically, what we recommend is keeping it clean and leaving it alone. Downsizing is also recommended for most piercings.
Keep it CLean
The first thing to do when cleaning a piercing is hand washing. Using clean hands before touching a piercing is the easiest way to avoid complications.
Once hands are clean, we suggest using a saline spray. Here we carry NeilMed piercing aftercare which disperses saline in a fine mist. Hold the nozzle about 3 inches away from the piercing and spraying as needed. Another great time to rinse our your piercings is at the end of your shower. Turn the water up a little warmer and let the water flush everything out for a good 15 seconds.
In some cases a saline soak is also beneficial. If a saline spray does not remove all debris from the piercing site or it is more convenient to do so, this will be the case. Spray saline onto a piece of gauze and hold this to the piercing for up to thirty seconds and then rinse.
Lastly, get it dry. Gently pat the area dry with a clean paper towel or use a blowdryer (on low heat or cool).
Leave it alone
Do not twist or rotate jewelry in a new piercing. Doing so prolongs the healing process. The less movement the better.
Do not use products other than saline such as: Neosporin or other antibiotic ointments, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or Aspirin. These tend to be more harsh than helpful.
Avoid excessive or rough cleaning. The human body is miraculous, let it do its thing.
Do not submerge piercing in natural bodies of water. Hot tubs and pools should also be avoided for at least the first 2-3 months of healing.
Do not change jewelry yourself while the piercing is healing. Without jewelry in place a new piercing can close quickly.
Downsize
For most piercings initial jewelry which accommodates for swelling will not remain suitable as that swelling subsides. Because of this, we suggest downsizing. This just means changing the jewelry to fit the piercing once it isn’t swollen.
Not downsizing jewelry can result in complications.
We suggest having a piercer do any jewelry changes while the piercing is still healing.
